Door to Nature: A Great Northern Diver

In the autumn of 2008, I entered the Seney National Wildlife Refuge for the first time. The property encompasses over 95,000 acres of wetland in the eastern part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

It was established in 1935 through the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps and has a one-way motor tour through the marshland, which is open May 15 to Oct.

The refuge is home to 211 species of birds, including nesting trumpeter swans and common loons.

During a visit a few years later, we were able to watch a pair of loons with two chicks in one of the pools. The small dark fledglings were being fed by their parents.

Common loons nest all across Canada and in far northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. They also breed in northern New England.
