Chopin Competition 2025: Stage 3, Day 3

Jed Distler reports on Thursday, October 16, 2025, that there was not much to get excited about in the hall.

He shares his impressions of Tomoharu Ushida, whom he first heard at the 2021 Chopin Competition and liked a lot. However, this year's performance was a mixed bag, as seen in his comments in blogs 1 and 10.

Ushida has formidable fingers and a huge sound, and he never lets you forget it.

Jed Distler was relieved when Ushida's loud and undifferentiated F minor Fantasy and B minor Sonata performances ended.

Zitong Wang's recital provided a little more perspective, but her loud playing seemed hollow and aggressive, while her softest passagework lacked body and definition.

Author's summary: Mixed impressions at the Chopin Competition.
