A national assessment system may address current social care inequalities and save money, writes Simon Bottery.
The Casey Commission, led by Baroness Casey, has the opportunity to evaluate radical proposals and address big issues in social care. One key consideration should be the approach to assessing people's finances and social care needs.
Currently, each of the 153 local authorities is responsible for conducting these assessments, which can lead to
local unfairness. For example, in some areas,
four times as many older people receive publicly funded care as in others.
Author's summary: National assessment system may improve social care fairness.
