No wolves allowed?  Montrose eyes novel approach to halt ‘non-native’ species at county line

Montrose County's Novel Approach to Halting Non-Native Species

A proposed ordinance in Montrose County aims to prevent the introduction of non-native species, including the Canadian gray wolf. The ordinance, introduced by the board of county commissioners, would prohibit the introduction, support, or habitat establishment of such species.

"We're introducing an apex predator into our communities and (into) an environment that literally can endanger endangered species that are federally protected,"

said Montrose County Commissioner Scott Mijares. The ordinance defines non-native species as those not historically present in the county in the past 100 years, with the Canadian gray wolf being a primary example. Violations would be punishable by fines of up to $1,000 per day.
