Stark County, State Auditor at odds over property tax reserves

Stark County and State Auditor at Odds Over Property Tax Reserves

The state auditor's office claims that Stark County has overtaxed its residents by exceeding cash reserve limits.

According to the North Dakota State Auditor's Office, led by State Auditor Josh Gallion, Stark County should have corrected the issue by dropping its property tax mills to zero and funding county operations through on-hand cash reserves.

“Approximately 33,767 residents reside in the Stark County region,” Gallion’s office said in the release. “Anyone who owns property (including homeowners) would be impacted by this decision.”

Stark County officials defend their fiscal policy, stating that the situation was oversimplified and the auditor's demands are unrealistic.
