When Marissa Monteith was in eighth grade, her parents gave her an ultimatum: if she was going to give up softball, she would still have to play a school sport.
Monteith, now a junior at Macomb Dakota, recalled:
My grandpa lives on a golf course and I’ve played golf for fun growing up. I guess I was pretty good at it, but never really took it seriously.
She added:
I never really took it seriously until I got to high school. I tried out for the golf team and I don’t even think the coach knew who I was at first. Her parents' motivation was clear:
My parents said there was no way I would just sit around after school and not do anything.
Monteith concluded:
I wasn’t about to sit around, either.
