The city of Phoenix, Arizona, the hottest city in the US, is combating rising temperatures with a local initiative.
As part of this initiative, the city launched ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade, a temporary installation of nine artist-designed shades in public spaces.
One of the commissioned shades, Cool down a notch: Reflections on Sunnyslope by Jessica Arias, features tent-like shades made with UV-resistant canvas and heat-reducing paints, resulting in a striking 48°F difference at one point.
