'Girls were awesome': how team of mostly bottom-agers won its home tournament

Warrnambool Mermaids' Victory

The Warrnambool Mermaids under-16 girls' division one side won their home tournament, defeating Millicent 50-18 in the grand final.

They're a pretty unselfish group of talented girls.

The team, coached by Ricky Smedts, went unbeaten across six games in the two-day Warrnambool Junior Seaside Classic tournament, which featured 165 teams from regional Victoria and South Australia.

Smedts noted,

It was a great tournament and good to play a few other teams we hadn't seen before.
