Rescue centres in Ireland are facing a crisis as they are "full" of animals given up by owners who are banned from keeping pets by their landlords.
"It's terrible, it's really terrible," said Martina Kenny, founder of My Lovely Horse rescue centre. "A pet can be a really huge part of your family; it can help mental health, the children can be in bits without it."
The housing crisis in Ireland has led to a severe shortage of rental accommodation, forcing people to move into homes where pets are not allowed. This issue is not limited to one area, but is a problem "all around Ireland", according to Kenny.
Some properties, including those under the jurisdiction of Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs), have pet bans in place. In response, Cork County Council has approved a motion urging the Department of Housing to reconsider this rule.
