Jefferson Chalmers Seeks Seawall Solutions

Residents of Jefferson Chalmers are exploring a seawall repair program to alleviate FEMA flood zone restrictions.

In the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood, residents are surveying seawall conditions along Fox Creek in Detroit. According to an Army Corps study, reinforced seawalls would remove the neighborhood from a FEMA flood hazard area.

"We boat, we fish, we kayak, we paddleboard — we try to take full advantage of all the beautiful assets here, and we know we’re privileged to have access to these,"

said Dan Piepszowski, a resident of Harbor Island. Councilmember Latisha Johnson is working to make applications for a seawall grant program available to the public by spring.
