She underwent dialysis and later received a kidney transplant, but Maxim inherited the disease, Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD).
About one in seven Americans has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), with 10% of cases due to a genetic condition.
Maxim became determined to find a cure, and his "Aha!" moment came in 2021, when a study in Nature Magazine showed that PKD is reversible in mice using CRISPR technology.
