Khosla-backed Mazama taps super-hot rocks in race to deliver 24/7 power | TechCrunch

Geothermal Energy Breakthrough

Geothermal startup Mazama Energy has achieved a significant milestone by drilling a borehole that set a temperature record, reaching 629˚ F (331˚ C) at the bottom.

This breakthrough could make geothermal energy a key player in powering data centers, as grids face increasing strain from growing demand.

“This one site can produce 5 gigawatts of energy,”

said Vinod Khosla, whose firm Khosla Ventures incubated the company. The potential at other sites could be even larger, with possibilities beyond the typical tens of megawatts produced by geothermal wells.
