Opinion: Why Age is No Barrier at Our Union
Today’s workers are tomorrow’s pensioners. As the General Secretary, I am proud to support all members, including our retired members.
UNISON is unique among UK unions in having a retired members’ organisation that mirrors that of our working members. Giving our retired members a voice is crucial, especially when it comes to issues like pensioner poverty.
- In the UK, at least 1.9 million pensioners live below the breadline.
- The gender pay gap is highest for women over 50, impacting their pensions.
- About one in five female pensioners in the UK lives in poverty.
Pensioner poverty was the topic on everyone’s lips at our retired members’ conference in Brighton recently, and with good reason.
