1985 Election Day Flood

The Election Day Flood of November 5, 1985, was a devastating event that affected West Virginia. Rick Felton, a CSX brakeman, recalled the night before the flood, when the sound of metal on metal was replaced by a loud shriek.

Hurricane Juan, which had weakened to a tropical depression, merged with another storm system over the Mid-Atlantic, causing catastrophic damage. The flood resulted in the loss of 47 lives and over $700 million in damages in West Virginia alone.

A once-and-former weather-maker was still stirring water and clouds from its original path in the Gulf.
