Centrist senator Rodrigo Paz won Bolivia's presidency with 54% of the vote, ending 20 years of rule by the Movement Toward Socialism party amid economic turmoil.
According to preliminary results, Paz topped right-wing rival Jorge "Tuto" Quiroga, who received 45% of the votes. Óscar Hassenteufel, the president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, stated:
"The trend is irreversible."
Paz's victory was celebrated by his supporters in a hotel ballroom in La Paz, where he took the podium with his family. The crowd cheered, shouting his name and holding phones aloft.
