Rural Cambodian Dance Experience
A community initiative, led by Soung Sopheak and his niece Yem Sovannry, aims to revive traditional Khmer performance arts in rural Cambodia.
Sopheak, founder of Khmer Arts Action (KAA), transformed his backyard in Arey Ksat into a performance space in 2023, hosting free gatherings for the local community and giving artists a chance to practice in front of a live audience.
Steps & Stories: Khmer Dance Experience offers an authentic introduction to Cambodian theatre, music, and dance, performed outdoors among paddies to the chirp of crickets.
- Monthly performances for communities started last year at the space in Arey Ksat, a 10-minute ferry ride from Phnom Penh.
- The initiative provides a unique opportunity for artists to practice and for the community to experience traditional Khmer arts.
