COMMENTARY: Rural students shouldn’t have to leave home to succeed

Rural Students’ Path to Success

Rural students in California, particularly Latina students, are using their education to build opportunities within their communities, demonstrating that success does not necessarily mean leaving home.

When discussing student success, the common narrative involves young people leaving their small towns to pursue opportunities elsewhere. However, in rural California, especially along the U.S.-Mexico border, success often takes on a different form. Many students want to stay, lead, and thrive in the very communities that raised them.

They are not looking to “make it out,” they are looking to build opportunity within their community.

As a rural educator and researcher in Imperial County, I have witnessed how Latina students bring determination, creativity, and deep community commitment to higher education. Their stories highlight that talent is deeply rooted across rural California.
